Meredith was born on October 14, 1930, in Evanston, IL to Lyman Barr and Lucy McCarthy. She resided there until her marriage to Gordon Charles Fowler Jr. in 1955 whereupon they moved to Michigan, first to Niles and later settling in St. Joseph where they built the rest of their lives together.

Her rather formal upbringing was upended by the births of her four boys, but she adapted to become the consummate mom, attending hundreds of baseball games, track and cross country meets, band and orchestra concerts, and an inordinate number of ER visits. Her title of mom, and later grandma, extended to those outside of the family, taking on that role for friends of her children and grandchildren, always happy to extend the circle of those whom she loved fiercely and without reservation.

In addition to her human family, her love extended to any dog she encountered, resulting in not only her home, but those of her friends and family, being filled with four-legged friends. She frequently, and with some justification, contended that her dogs were smarter and better-behaved than her children. Fortunately, she received some relief when she found her grandchildren perfect in all respects.

Throughout their lives together, Meredith and Gordon maintained a high degree of intellectual curiosity and were lifelong readers and learners. After their children were grown and Gordon retired, they traveled widely, and their home still houses hundreds of books from, and about, every corner of the world. Numerous scrapbooks brought their many adventures to life. They invariably expressed the feeling they had been very fortunate in their lives and were grateful to all those who were part of it – family, friends, neighbors, and caregivers alike.

Meredith was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Jane Stevenson; husband; and dogs, Barney, Thunder, Dooley, Ellie, and Lucy. She is survived by her sister, Courtney Barr; sons, Christopher (Patricia) Fowler, James (Sharon) Fowler, Thomas (Sandra) Fowler, and Scott (Loma) Fowler; as well as her grandchildren, Gordon, Katy, Emma, Margaret, Elena, and Nicholas.
