A grief healing and education center for children and their families
Losing a loved one at any age can be heart-wrenching, but for grieving children and teens, the rush of emotions can be very confusing, frightening and lonely.
Lory’s Place was founded by Hospice at Home. It provides compassionate and caring peer support services to grieving children, ages 3 to 18 years old, throughout Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana. Young adults may attend independently and groups are also offered to parents, guardians, grandparents, other adult relatives and close friends.
Lory's Place also has an Anticipatory Grief program that helps children and families who are anticipating the death of a loved one due to an illness, disease or injuries.
In all Lory's Place programs, the trained staff gently guides each person through grief and the healing process by sharing feelings, experiences and memories with peers in a support group setting. These regularly scheduled support group sessions happen at offices and satellite facilities in St. Joseph, South Haven, Stevensville and Niles. The sessions allow children and adults to interact with peers who have suffered similar loss, or who are experiencing anticipatory grief. Music, art, storytelling, nature, writing and play promote the healing process.
At Starks Family Funeral Homes, we were personally helped by Lory’s Place when Laura’s and Olivia’s mother Tracey Starks passed away. We will guide you to their services when you make arrangements at any of our chapels.
Lory’s Place was established in 2004 in memory of Dr. Lory Schults, who died at age 40 in an auto accident. Lory loved her two young children and enjoyed life fully. Lory’s Place is dedicated to all who grieve the death of a loved one.
