My godmother Marilyn, very sweet to me always, never forgot my birthday and always sent me cash at Christmas. She found meaning from being involved with her community and church and found contentment living by her own standards and never apologizing for loving her own eccentricities in defiance of a world which would prefer us conform and be dull. Being able to count on her being in her little house on Erie Street or walking downtown gave me a sense of security that I'm going to be missing. For most of my life she was two doors down if I needed an egg for cookies, help with lines for my school play, someone to mentor my catechism, or give me a reference on college applications. She was always there for me right up until the end in a way that I was never there for her. I feel like the little boy at the end of Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree - she gave me so much over decades and purely out of love and honor. I hope she knew that she contributed to my success in more ways than I ever considered before this moment. I truly hope she gets to experience Heaven and the glory of the God she so passionately devoted herself to. She was one of a kind and I was lucky to be her godson.
