The first time I met Gus I was on my bicycle and he was on his. I was riding on Blue Star highway and noticed a bike in my mirror was gaining on me. I tried to speed up and stay ahead of it but eventually Gus caught up to me. Then we rode together and he asked me how many miles I had ridden for the year. I felt pretty good about telling him I had around 300. Gus answered and said he had about 3000. I found out he had known my father and my uncles and had flown my Uncle Dave’s plane many times even taking one uncle to Beaver Island. Many times when we crossed paths on the road or trail I would turn around and ride with him. He had many stories and was good at telling them. He was an inspiration to me and I’m sure countless others. We will miss seeing him on the road. My sympathies to family and friends.
Ride on Gus.

Glad to hear you rode with my father! He did log a lot of miles! He was still riding his recumbent trike when he was 91! He found out he could ride at the track behind Hartmann School so went there. That was safer at that age! May you continue to enjoy your riding days!

I used to ride bikes with Gus. He was a fountain of worldly and bike wisdom. Things he said still resonate. The hills and the wind were "character builders" and all you had to do was "gear down and go." I will treasure the many miles we rode together. I loved his stories and learning about his history. I will always smile at his memory. My condolences to his family. RIP Gus

Thank you for those memories! My father did have a wealth of stories and history to share! He loved talking with people and he did love riding his bike, whether a 2 wheeler or his recumbent trike in his later years! May memories of my father go with you on your rides!
