Lavern's Obituary

Lavern Roberts Twyman passed Thursday, October 10, 2024, after battling Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia for a number of years.

Mom was born October 15, 1940, in McFarland, CA, raised in Sonoma, CA, to Dallas and Iris Roberts. She was the 3rd of 4 daughters. Moving to Michigan at the tender age of 17. She soon settled in, married at 19, she and dad started raising their family of 5 daughters a year later.

Mom was a God-fearing woman and was a devout member of Fairplain Assembly of God until it closed, then began attending the Blue Roof Church until her health prevented regular attendance.

She was a stay-at-home mom, riding minibikes, baking and camping with her daughters. When she found herself suddenly single in the 1980's she began a long career with Lakeshore Studios where she began making lamp shades, and ended her career being their Human Resources liaison. The staff of mostly women commonly referred to themselves as the "Shady Ladies." She found lots of occasions for mischief with her daughters and friends through the years. She would get all of the girls off to school, then play tennis with a neighbor, took up golf in her 40's joining the Shady Lady golf group, and even calling off school for her girls to go spend a day shopping out of town with her.

No matter what was going on, her house was always open, full of teenagers from the neighborhood, church, or school, and usually with a pizza or cookies fresh out of the oven. She was a reliable room mother to her girls' elementary classrooms. We're not sure if it was to keep an eye on us or if she truly enjoyed it. Another thing about mom... She was known for her baking. NEVER bring a store-bought pie crust into her home.

She found love again many years later when she and childhood friend Stanley rekindled their friendship and married soon after, splitting their time between their homes in California, and Michigan.

She is survived by her daughters Lorie Vogie, Julie (Rob) Sanders, Joyle Woulfe, Lisa Roberts-Spencer, and Dana (Wayne) Blankenship, Stepchildren Clyde Twyman and Deanna Twyman, 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 sisters (Barbara, Judy, Dallene), the love of her life Stanley, her grandson Aaron Vogie, and sons-in-law Ross Spencer and Danny Smith.

Visitation will be at Starks and Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, Thursday October 17, 2024, from 10-11am with service to begin at 11 am. The burial will be in Spring Run Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Assemblies of God c/o Ruth Clark #237848, 1445 N Boonville Ave, Springfield, MO 65802 to support her missionary efforts.
