John's Obituary

John Frederick Heth, 57, of St. Joseph, MI, passed away Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services. A private celebration of life will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hanson Hospice Center, https://www.spectrumhealthlakeland.org/hanson-hospice-center. John was born in St. Joseph, MI, 3/17/66. His parents, Gene & Nancy, raised him, and his older sister Polly, in St. Joseph, MI. John graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1984 and attended several universities, graduating from Central Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. After graduation, John began working at Saturn Corporation in Detroit, MI as a Geometric Dimensional Tolerance Engineer. He worked at Saturn for 10 years, then left to take a similar engineering position at Whirlpool Corporation in Benton Harbor. John worked at Whirlpool until he retired in 2016.

John was very independent and enjoyed being a do-it-yourselfer around his house. He enjoyed learning, especially about how things worked. He soaked up knowledge on an impressive array of topics and could spend hours talking with friends about them. He liked to roast his own coffee beans, grow his own vegetables, make his own soap, ferment his own kimchi, brew his own beer, and build his own computers. With his engineering background, it seems he could fix anything…or at least try to. He also loved the outdoors, and many weekends were spent with close friends and family camping, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, and fishing. His dogs, first Colby and then Fritz, brought him much joy as well.

John is survived by his sister Polly (Rick) Wilson, niece Laura Wilson, nephew Perry Wilson, uncle Guy (Sylvia) Bull, as well as close friends David and Kristin Grams and David Kraklau.
