Jean's Obituary

Jean Lorraine Mort, 97, of Saint Joseph, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 6, 2022, surrounded by family and caregivers.

On October 2, 1924, Jean was born in South Haven, Michigan, to the late Charles and Mary Stein. She graduated from South Haven high school and attended beauty school to become a hairdresser. A vast majority of her life was dedicated to caring for her Spina Bifida Paraplegic daughter, Debbie.

Music was her passion, and she shared that love through her band, The Accents. They played at local nursing homes and brought joy to all who heard them perform. Jean was an accomplished pianist and gave lessons to anyone who wanted to learn. She also played the guitar and mandolin. Jean’s talents were recognized when she became a member of the Monday Musical and enjoyed the club for many years.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents: Charles and Mary Stein. Her brothers: Ivan, Ted, and George; sister, Audrey; and beloved daughter Debbie.

Jean’s Song of Life will remain in the hearts of those she left behind. Jean is survived by her son, Jeffrey “Yogi,” daughter-in-law, Pamela, granddaughter Amber, brother Walter (Jeanne), great-grand dog Luna, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean will be remembered by best friend and caregiver Joyce Totzke. Also, the team at Private Duty Home Healthcare. “The Girls”: Gloria, Sara, Shonay, and Tserha.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the summer.
