Al's Obituary
Albert (Al) Paul Levin, 84, of Benton Harbor, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2021. He was born in 1937 in Lawton, Michigan, to Ida (Abrams) and Samuel Levin who owned Levin’s Department Store in Decatur, Michigan, where he grew up.
Al graduated from the University of Michigan in 1959. It was there that he and Sondra Gelder began dating. They were married two years later, a marriage that lasted for sixty happy years. Al and Sondra raised their three children in Benton Harbor, surrounded by a large, loving family and tightly-knit community. In 2004, he retired from Mac Engineering after twenty three satisfying years. Also at the center of his life was Temple B’nai Shalom where he served as treasurer for many years.
Al was an avid reader and a history buff. His passions included tennis, cribbage, the Cubs, and the Michigan Wolverines.
Al died as he lived—surrounded by love, gentle in spirit, with a quiet generosity of heart.
He is survived by his wife Sondra; children Beth (Sandi-Jo), Bruce (Donna), and Jonathan (Einat); nine grandchildren, and one great-grandson: Cody, Fallon, Logan, Ilan, Miles, Adi, Kira, Ada, Emanuel, and Adam, along with many other cherished family members and friends. Al was predeceased in death by his siblings Robert Levin and Marlene Tilkin.
A graveside service will take place on Sunday, December 26th at 2pm at Temple Beth-El Cemetery, in Benton Harbor with Rabbi Harold Berman officiating.
