Roger's Obituary

Roger Leslie Wight, 82, of Portage, formerly of South Haven, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born January 30, 1939 to Leslie Merritt and Etta Vanetta (Bailey) Wight in South Haven. Roger graduated from South Haven High School with the Class of 1957. He married his high school sweet heart, Marcia Corey, on January 2, 1960 at the First English Lutheran Church in South Haven. They celebrated 61 years of marriage this past winter. Roger worked as a salesman in the automotive industry. He also owned and operated Sportsman Trailer Center in Schoolcraft, Michigan before his eventual retirement.

Roger loved attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was an avid baseball fan, attending Spring Training in Florida every Spring. He also enjoyed fly fishing and was a professional wood carver after retirement. In a word, Roger’s family describes him as “Awesome” and as a “Hero”. He will be remembered by his children as a Superman who could fix anything. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Roger is survived by his wife – Marcia Wight of Portage, children – Timothy (Sandy) Wight of Treasure Island, Florida, Thomas (Candi) Wight of Port Charlotte, Florida, and Jennifer Swope-Haines of Portage. Nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at the Filbrandt Chapel in South Haven. Graveside services will follow the visitation at 1:30 PM at the North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Contributions can be made in Roger’s memory to the American Cancer Society or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
