George and Elizabeth were wonderful companions on our annual fall trips to Stratford. We loved the same types of plays and had a great time - not just the performances, but also breakfast at our favorite restaurant, across the street from The Queen's Inn. I miss them both and sharing political opinions.

In my belief system, there is an afterlife of sorts where we are reunited with aspects of the souls of those we love. Love never ends. I am sorry for the family's loss but happy that Elizabeth and George are together again. They sure brought a lot of life and energy and kindness to the South Haven community. God bless their loved ones.

I've known George, and Elizabeth, first as a new neighbor, and then as a friend. George was a people person, and his involvement in so many areas here in South Haven after his retirement as well as the interests he and Elizabeth shared, created intersecting circles of friendship that brought so many people together. He loved his succession of black cats, the Detroit Tigers, U.of M. sports teams, PBS, politics, birdwatching, playing bridge with friends, his men's book club, and his men's group lunches, and all things history. South Haven gave him the opportunity to get involved with the South Haven Historical Association, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum, Al-Van, The South Haven Democratic Club, the Van Buren County Democrats, and he was still close enough to K'zoo to keep up with old friends and colleagues there. A fact that you might not know about George: when he couldn't sleep, he would recite the names of all the U.S. presidents and their vice presidents (much like counting sheep). Here's another George project: think of as many last names as you can that are actually an occupation as well, like Miller!

George was a friend who was always willing, even eager at times, to "get into Good Trouble". His hope for the world was for all to have enough, to be safe and and to be treated fairly. He and Elizabeth were founding members of the South Haven Democratic Club and worked for all they believed in throughout their lives. He made every effort to have an open mind and listened to books on tape when his vision no longer allowed him to read. George had many friends who shared his interests and he was always eager for thoughtful conversation. I'll miss George and hope he and Elizabeth are sharing their good times together somewhere out among the stars.

I remember Dr. Miller from the WMU Campus School in the 1960s, where I was a student. He served as our principal during the last years of the elementary school. He followed the departure of a rather hotheaded principal, and Dr. Miller was appreciated for his pleasant personality. It was nice to meet him years later when I studied education at Western.

Dear Children of Elizabeth and George, I feel as if I have met you, since your parents mentioned you all so often! They also were proud grandparents, as you know. I loved and admired your parents very much. Your mother was feisty with strong opinions and a good heart. I was a little afraid of her when we first met! Your father was a consummate story teller, among his many accomplishments. I loved hearing him reminisce about his Detroit days. He also had strong opinions, but delivered in a gentle way. They were both role models for me and for many others as well, I am sure. I am sending you my love and sympathy.

George was my colleague and he and Elizabeth were Sherwood's and my friends for many years. He was a man dedicated to democratic (and Democratic) values through his leadership and actions. He was a leader in the American Association of University Professors and in the Department of Education and Professional at Western Michigan University. His dedication to teacher education and to his students and in-service teachers lives on in many schools, students, and communities. George enjoyed learning about South Haven's history; watching birds; and admiring the Lake. His abiding interests were in the welfare of his friends, his community, and our nation. His enduring pride was in his family. His many contributions to our lives are cherished memories.

My favorite memory of George was when he used to take the grandkids down to the Golden Brown bakery (which he called the Brown and Gold in reference to WMU) for breakfast in their pajamas! They looked forward to doing that every year and usually had on pajamas that Elizabeth had made for them. I’m sure is was entertaining for the rest of the customers, as well

George was a wonderful man—his human decency always shone through. In addition to being a great educator, he was very engaged in politics—a strong advocate for democracy (both political and economic) and social justice. He will be missed.

I loved your Husband / Father. He helped me so much in becoming the teacher that I was. He was endearing and supportive especially during my practicum. May God bless him and his family.
