Michael's Obituary

Michael J. “Mike” VanVoorst, 57, of Decatur, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on October 14, 2020, at his home with his family by his side. A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at 11AM, at Decatur Bible Church, 80797 M- 51, Decatur, with Pastor Steve DeGroft officiating. A private family burial will take place at Harrison Cemetery. Friends may visit with Mike’s family on Monday, October 19, 2020, from 5PM until 7PM, at Newell Chapel, 83313 M-51, Decatur. Mike was born on January 17, 1963, to John & Diana (Bell) VanVoorst in Paw Paw. He graduated from Decatur High School and continued his education at Southwestern Michigan College where he earned his Associates in Electrical Studies. Mike worked as a Custodian for Decatur Public Schools for over 42 years before his retirement. Mike was a member of Decatur Bible Church where he attended for 50 years, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served as a Deacon. He enjoyed playing softball, going fishing, and he loved all sports. He was a handy man and loved fixing things. Most of all, Mike loved to spend his time with his family. Mike is survived by his siblings, Joni Kester of Paw Paw, Jim (Sherry) VanVoorst of Paw Paw, and twin sister Lori (Bruce) Burkett of Decatur; brother-in-law David Lumsden, and all his beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John & Diana VanVoorst and sister Vicki Lumsden.
