Harold's Obituary

Harold David “Hal” Bauschke, 94, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away on July 28, 2020, at Pine Ridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Stevensville, where he resided. Hal entered the world on November 19, 1925, in Lowell, MI, the second of three sons born to Harvey and Amanda (Glover) Bauschke. He was raised on a farm in Watervliet and graduated from Watervliet High School, class of 1944. He was drafted prior to graduation and was unable to complete his senior year. He was awarded his diploma at a later date. He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Woodworth (DD460). Hal was very proud of his naval service. He and his wife attended several crew reunions. Hal kept in touch with his former Captain throughout the Captain’s life. Following his discharge, he obtained a Master Electrician’s license and was self-employed as an electrical contractor in Hartford. On September 28, 1963, he married Rose (Piraino) Engler in St. Joseph and they were married for 52 years prior to her death in 2016. After retirement, Hal and Rose traveled extensively in the U.S., as well as touring Europe several times, and visiting the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia. He was a member of the Lions Club, a life member of the American Legion, and a devoted parishioner of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Jane Simmons of Lawrence, son Thomas Alan Bauschke of Watervliet; two grandchildren, Becky (Jeff) Ross of Ortonville, MI and Matt Simmons of Kalamazoo; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Jason Ross; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Hal was preceded in death by his parents; wife Rose; and brothers Raymond and Gordon Bauschke. A private family service will be held at a later date.
