Shima's Obituary

Shima Denton Bettig, 88, of Benton Harbor, passed away, July, 6, 2020 at West Woods in Bridgman. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2020, at 1PM at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph with Pastor Miles Becher officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, from 11AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. A private burial will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sodus, MI. Memorial donations may be made to Napier Parkview Baptist Church or Krasl Art Center. Those wishing to share a memory of Shima may do so online at www.starks-menchinger.com. Shima was born on July 15, 1931 in Tokyo, Japan to Tomiyo (Nora) and Suematu Furukawa. She moved to the US in 1952 when she married Lloyd Denton. She had another chance at love and marriage when she married Paul Bettig in 2002. She spent many years enjoying her passions which included painting, photography, crocheting, cooking and gardening. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, working on endless projects, and spending time with her Japanese friends. Shima is survived by her husband, Paul Bettig; son, Clyde Denton of Pittsburg, PA; daughter, Kathern (Robert) Burger of Savannah, GA; sister, Kyoko Inoue; grandchildren, Kiesha Denton of St. Joseph, Kristina (Aaron) Soule of St. Joseph, David (Erin) Wroten of Hanover, PA, Sarah (Brian) Lott, Josh (Jennie) Denton, Caleb (Theresa) Denton, and Zach, all of Pittsburg, PA; great-grandchildren, Alana, Lilly, Mason, Maddy, Jonas, James, Jackson, Addison, Owen, and Collin. Shima was preceded in death by her parents; late husband, Lloyd Denton; sons, Frank Denton and Michael Denton; siblings, Mituko Matue, Ayako Tanaka, and Chiyoko Koezumi.
