Matt and I often talked about what defined a true friend. Matt was the truest of friends; and his final act was as true to his character as is possible.
I love and miss you brother! I will be forever grateful for your trust, generosity and friendship...

I want pass on my condolences to the entire Kihlstrand family. Growing up next door to them left me with found childhood memories of Matt. My hearts breaks for all of you. I remember the day I met him as a baby. After growing up, we lost touch. But, recently I was able to reconnect with him on social media. I had hoped to see him again one day around the neighborhood. I now hope to see him on the other side. Anyone whom saves a child’s life only to sacrifice their own like is hero of another kind...one we must always remember and thank.

Matt was the first Historian for the Iota Upsilon chapter of Alpha Tau Omega at WMU, he was a founding father of our chapter in 1994, 29 men strong, he lived in our first house - a roommate, a friend, a brother. Miles and time separates us, the bond we share has not. He upheld the virtues of truth and love, always willing to help, not a bad word to say. To the Kihlstrand friends and family that do not know us, please know our thoughts and prayers go with you in this difficult time. We are heartbroken, love and respect from the brothers of ATO.

I'm so sad to hear this, it's been a while but he was my fraternity brother, and a great man. God Bless, RIP brother.

You'll always have a very special piece of my heart, Matt. You touched my soul very deeply and I will always have nothing but love for you and our memories, laughs, challenges and everything that we've shared together. You were an absolute one of a kind, one of the kindest people I've ever known and you will always have my love, honey. Plus, you also made the best lasagna ever!! (don't think you'd ever accept me losing my humour so had to throw that in!) Rest in Peace my darlin, rest in peace. You died a hero and I love you. xoxo

I have known Matt throughout my 20 years in the industry. He was always the kindest, non judge-mental person I’ve ever met. It was Devastating when I heard of his death. In retrospect, that is Matt, the way he left us. Helping someone else. Will miss you. Prayers to his family. ❤️
