When we were boys, we walked the streets of Dowagiac together, we went to the same elementary school, high school, community college and attended Western Michigan University together at one point. He ran track, played basketball. I played football, was on the wrestling team and was on the track team. At one point when we were in high school, Larry was ranked number 2 in the State of Michigan in the quarter mile track event. Not bad for a kid from Dowagiac. In high school, we had a healthy competition between us for grade point ranking each six-week grade reporting period. Larry often won because the was a better math student. I would give him a run for his money. The competition kept us both on the honor roll in high school.
Larry Hickman was my friend. I have a lot of good memories of our time together as boys growing up in a small town in Michigan. I recently, received an invitation to the Class of 69 Fifty-Year reunion. I was looking forward to seeing old friends and renewing relationships. When we gather, Larry will be missed. He was a quiet, gentle force, slow to anger and had an infectious smile.
My condolences to the Hickman family. Remember while Larry is no longer with us in physical form, he is still with us. He lives on in our memories. To the Hickman children, your dad will be with you and your children forever. His DNA is alive within you and your children and eventually their children.
On this day family, I encourage you to as much as possible, focus on the good memories and the things that you did that made you smile.
I am saddened by the loss of my friend but I am going to hold on to great memories of me, Larry and high school friends, discussing sports and talking trash on the bus on the way to track events and back home.
