Maurice's Obituary

Maurice Charles Riggs, Sr., 83 of Dowagiac died peacefully at home early Friday morning, February 23, 2018 surrounded by the love of his family. Mort was born January 23, 1935 in Dowagiac, Michigan to Gladys (Sindt) and John Henry Riggs. Mort was married to the love of his life, Mary Helen (Ellis) Riggs on April 19, 1953. She preceded him in death on March 6, 2014. They shared 60 wonderful years together. In 1956, Mort joined his brother, John Henry, Jr. (Jack) and formed Riggs’ Brothers Plastering. Their brother, Robert (Bob), worked with them for a short period of time. They both have preceded him in death. Mort has passed down his plastering trade to his son and grandson. Mort’s love, kindness, and big heart will be missed by his children, Belinda (Pepper) Colvin of Edwardsburg, Gloria (Art) Colvin of Edwardsburg, Maurice, Jr. (Yvette) Riggs of Florida and Julie (John) Hokanson of Dowagiac. Also surviving are six grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren along with extended family. Throughout Mort’s life, he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his beloved dogs, Queenie and Ralph. He also enjoyed camping and mushroom hunting. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan but most of all he loved the Chicago Cubs. The highlight of his last years was being able to watch his Chicago Cubs win the World Series. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 27th from 11 to 12 with a 12 o’clock service at Clark Chapel, 405 Center St., Dowagiac, Michigan. Cremation will follow. In honor of Mort, family and friends are welcome to wear Chicago Cubs or Chicago Bears attire. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Home Lakeland Health Affiliate, St. Joseph, Michigan.
