My heart is breaking as I write this, for I feel I have lost a dear relative and friend.
I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Mr. Laing last year (2017). I worked for his family and treated like part of the family. He was a steady presence, a dependable comfort. He did what he said he would do and when he said he would do it. I loved to listen to him tell stories and never did I become weary of him or his stories. He enjoyed his life with his life long love Barbara and I admired the relationship they shared. He would often say they were two young minds trapped in old bodies. I couldn't have said it any better. He was sharp and witty. Personable and warm. He was adventurous and kind. His presence, his voice, his wit...HE is very missed.
To Barbara and his children, his family and loved ones, and to everyone who knew and loved him as well, my condolences, and heartfelt sympathy.

Always an encouraging word, a smile or knowing nod, Mr. Laing (as I always knew him) was instrumental in my eventually attending the University of Michigan. A non-athlete myself, I felt he was personally proud of my accomplishments and having another "homer" attending the University he and Barb so loved. I'm very sorry that I hadn' been in touch with him for many years, but I have never forgotten his ongoing kindnesses toward me. He is the epitome of the definition of a "Michigan Man". The Dowagiac and University of Michigan communities have lost a hell of a man! God's blessings to him and the Laing family.

May you find comfort in the many memories you have of him. It's a rare family that has such a great man to look up to, and be a presence in their lives for so many years! He will be missed, but you will always have your memories to share.

My sympathies to the Lang family on the loss of Bruce. I remember many good times as a young person having the Lang family living next door to us at their thunder mountain cottage. I know he will be missed by everyone who knew him. Our houghts and prayers are with the Barb and the whole family.

Barbara, G. Bruce and Family:
Really sorry to hear of the passing of your husband and father. D. Bruce was a true inspiration to me as a student at Dowagiac High School. I saw him in attendance at many of my sporting events. He always had encouraging words for me. I remember reading later that he was Board of Education President when the high school that I attended was built. Since I have served as a school superintendent for 21 years, I know how stressful that must have been on him and his family. I also worked for D. Bruce at Wolverine Ins. during the summers and after school while attending SMC. Even though I was "lowest on the employee roster" he always had time to talk to me. My favorite memory was when he invited up from the basement to his office to introduce me to two of his friends - Coach Johnny Orr and Cazzie Russell both of the University of Michigan. Cazzie had just been voted the Big Ten player of the year and the NCAA collegiate player of the year. And they both shook my hand - right there in the office in Dowagiac. But that is just the way D. Bruce operated, always thinking about how he could influence those around him in positive fashion. D. Bruce had a profound impact on my life. I am really fortunate to have made his acquaintance.

Barb and family--although I did not spend a great deal of time with Bruce, I felt I knew him well having read his book regarding military life and seeing him often at Wolverine Mutual.
My thoughts and beat wishes are with the entire Laing family.

My condolences to the Laing family. Although I didn't know D. Bruce Laing personally, our families ran up and down Green St. together for many years. What a productive life he accomplished. His legacy will live on, no doubt, with his extended family and many friends. Job well done D. Bruce Laing !!!!!

Mr.Laing was one of the greatest gentlemen I’ve had the joy of knowing throughout my life. He was genuine, caring and extremely intelligent and informed. The Laing family’s generosity toward our community was often accomplished anonymously, but the love and compassion Mr. Laing showed through his guidance and leadership will not be forgotten. He leaves behind an incredible family that I value as true friends. We all have been blessed by Our God knowing Mr Laing. Go Blue Sir!!!
