Wayne's Obituary

Wayne K. Mattix, 80, of Dowagiac, passed away, Saturday, February 12, 2022 at his home.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will take place from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Saturday, February 26, 2022 at the Dowagiac Moose Lodge #933, 54867 M-51 N, Dowagiac. A Memorial Toast will take place at 6:00 P.M. Memorial donations in Wayne’s name may be made to Caring Circle Hospice or Cass Co. Firefighters Association. Wayne was born August 21, 1941 in Dowagiac to Kenneth & Doris (Phillips) Mattix. He graduated from Dowagiac Union High School, Class of 1959. Following high school, Wayne served his country in the United States Army. On June 9, 1962, he married the former Billy “Frances” Hunter in Marcellus. Wayne served the City of Dowagiac for thirty-three 1/2 years on the fire department, the last seventeen as chief, retiring in 1999. He was the first cadre of state certified fire instructors, and he trained many new recruits over his career. Wayne was a long-time member of the Dowagiac Moose Lodge #933 where he served as governor for two years. In his earlier years, Wayne enjoyed golfing and fishing. He also enjoyed making and fitting golf clubs. Most of all, he enjoyed the time spent with his family, especially his grand & great-grandchildren, each of whom had a special nickname given by him. Wayne was a people person who never met a stranger.

Wayne is survived by his wife Frances; his children-Michael (Tracy) Mattix of Coloma, Melissa Mattix of Dowagiac; five grandchildren-Kaitlin (Zac) Pierce, Rebecca (Tony) Thar, Courtney (Sean) Hennen, Cierra (Brendan) McCaffrey & Kenneth Isaac Mattix; nine great-grandchildren-Abbi & Parker Pierce, Mattix & Taylor Thar, Foster Hennen, Bryon, Jonathan, Killian & Neila McCaffrey; two brothers-Garland (Karyl) Mattix of Kalamazoo, Michael B. (Melonie) Mattix of Dowagiac; several nieces & nephews; and friends too numerous to mention. He was preceded in death by his parents.
