Timothy's Obituary
Timothy S. Vergot, 64, passed away unexpectedly on August 24, 2023 in Stevensville just six days after his brother Mike.
Tim was born on May 2, 1959 in Benton Harbor, MI to the late John and Donna (Ruthsatz) Vergot, who lived on their farm in Stevensville where they raised Tim and his four siblings.
Tim spent his entire life in Michigan, most of which was spent working the family farm with his parents and siblings. In addition to his parents, Tim was preceded in death by his brothers Mike and John, Jr. (Butch).
Surviving Tim are his sisters Susan (Mark) Benson of Rapid City, SD and Kathy (Ivan) LaHaie of Grass Lake. He also leaves to cherish his memory a nephew, two nieces, four grandnieces, and several cousins.
After graduating from Lakeshore High School, where he was a member of Future Farmers of America, Tim worked for Avion Coach before joining his brother Butch as his dad John’s right-hand men on the farm. John was a wealth of farming knowledge, and Tim learned it all and then some. Like his dad, Tim never hesitated to share farming advice, tips, or rules-of-thumb with anyone who asked. For many years, he, John, and Donna, along with their co-workers and dear friends Bertie and Robin Hamilton, were the faces of the Vergot family fruit stand. Tim in particular, was known for his anecdotes, tall tales, and good-natured teasing. Tim and his brother Mike took over the day-to-day farm operations when John’s health no longer permitted him to do so, and they ran the farm together with great pride and commitment until their untimely deaths this year.
In his spare time (what little he had), Tim enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed a hunting/fishing trip to Alaska. He was a big supporter of the Lakeshore High School Boys Wrestling program, where he volunteered as a scorekeeper and statistician. He loved playing pinochle and entertaining his nieces and nephew whenever they stopped by to visit. In the offseason, he and Mike spent time at the casinos, where Tim had an uncanny knack for winning. Tim was also a expert grape trimmer who took a great deal of joy from the respite and solitude it provided.
Tim was deeply thankful for all those who supported the farm and fruit stand over the years. He was particularly grateful to Robin Hamilton for her commitment and loyalty to the family, as well as the friendship and joy she and her daughter Lauryn provided. His cousins Pete and Judi were always there whenever he needed a helping hand. Tim also treasured the relationships he built with local farmers who relied upon each other for the highest-quality produce. Most importantly, he was deeply indebted to his brother, Mike, for the love, companionship, and camaraderie they shared in the years following their parents’ death.
There will be a celebration of life for Tim as well as his parents John and Donna and brother Mike on Sunday, Oct. 8th from 2-5 pm at Grande Mere Inn in Stevensville.
