Scott's Obituary
Scott Athey, 69, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2022. Arrangements have been entrusted to Newell Chapel and Cremation Services.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in Scott’s name may be made to Centrica Care Hospice, 7100 Stadium Dr. Kalamazoo, 49009. Those wishing to leave an online condolence for the family may do so at www.newelchapel.com.
Scott was born June 23, 1953, in Dowagiac to Robert B. and Bette (Wylie) Athey. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1972. On April, 14 1979 he married his high school sweetheart, Cindy Kraak. Scott worked at Upjohn/Pfizer for over 30 years before his retirement. He truly enjoyed the outdoors where he spent most his time as an avid hunter and fisherman. Scott also enjoyed watching all his family’s sporting events, never missing a single game. Most of all he loved his family and friends. Scott was a man who, if you only met him once, you would never forget him. As for the stories you may hear from his friends that seem unbelievable, they are probably true! He will be one that is greatly missed by all.
Scott is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Athey; children, Wade (Jean) Athey and Brant (Chrissy) Athey; not-so-adopted children John Burns and Hunter Bell; grandchildren, Augustus (Gus) Athey and Violet Athey, Kaley and Ryan Athey; step-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Callie and Jaxon VanTilburg; Namesake Scottie Lynn Bell; siblings, Shirley (Keith) Lawrence, Duane (Kathy) Athey, Karen (Tom) Whiting, Doug (Sandy) Athey and Jayne (Norman) Karasch; mother, Bette Athey; mother-in-law, Beuna Mae Kraak; brother and sister-in-laws Steve Kraak, Janice (Steve) Groendyk; and so many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert B. Athey; and father-in-law, Frank Kraak.
