Roy's Obituary
Roy Roberts, 96 of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Michigan, passed away quietly on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Pine Ridge Rehab and Nursing Facility.
Roy was born February 2, 1926 one of twin sons to the late Eleanor (Smith) and Floyd Roberts. Roy graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. While in Basic Training he married his high school sweetheart Betty Jerue in Witchita Falls Texas. They were married for 77 years. For the remainder of the war, Roy was based on Okinawa Japan, after which he returned to Betty and Benton Harbor, where they raised three children and spent many wonderful years with family and friends. Roy worked as a draftsman for Saranac Machine Company. The remainder of his career was spent as a quality control Engineer for Gast Manufacturing in Benton Harbor, retiring at the age of 65 in 1991.
Roy was a gifted athlete, excelling in running, biking, handball, racquetball and his favorites, tennis and baseball. He and Betty were avid Cubs fans, and one of his favorite memories was attending Cubs Fantasy Camp in Mesa Arizona, where he played catcher with some of the former Cubs. Roy was a YMCA member for over 60 years.
Roy is survived by his wife, Betty, the love of his life, daughter Sharon (Joe) Gillette of Whitmore Lake, MI, son Michael (Anita) Roberts of Columbia Station, OH and daughter Christi (Wes) Rice of Spring Lake, MI, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Roy was preceded by his parents, his twin brother Ray and sister Beverly Zindler.
