Bob's Obituary
Robert A. “Bob” Smith, 85, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Bronson Commons in Mattawan. Arrangements have been entrusted to Newell Chapel and Cremation Services.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Newell Chapel, 83313 M-51, Decatur, with Pastor Mike Heflin officiating. Burial will follow at Harrison Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Decatur Hamilton Fire Department in honor of the Smith family, which many whom have volunteered. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, May 27, 2022 from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at the funeral home. Those wishing to leave an online condolence for the family may do so at www.newelchapel.com.
Bob was born February 27, 1937, in Decatur to Allen and Mildred (Chappel) Smith. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1955. Bob joined the National Guard in 1954. He was known as a hardworking man, he started working for Consumers Energy in 1964 and worked there until his retirement. He took pride in having his license for Ham radio, which he spent much of his time on. Bob had a passion for the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He loved to garden and spend time on his farm growing grapes and asparagus. Most of all Bob loved his family and will be greatly missed.
Bob is survived by his children, Randy Smith and Debby (Jason Emmons) Duran; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Teri Bess; step-daughters, Trina Fester and Tina Goetz; and siblings, Donna Shugars, Mary Lou Smith and William Raymond Smith.
