Peter's Obituary
Peter Katz died August 17, 2022, in the loving care of his beloved wife, sister, and friends at Hanson Hospice Center of Stevensville, Michigan. He was 65 years old.
Peter was born November 5, 1956, in Mount Vernon, New York, just a few miles north of the Bronx. His mother would jokingly mention to him as he got older that his birth that day prevented her from casting her vote the very next day for the democratic US Presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson. So, as a result, Dwight Eisenhower was re-elected to the presidency.
The following year, Peter’s family moved to Syosset, a small suburb in Long Island, New York, about 30 miles east of New York City.
Peter often said his childhood in Syosset was nothing less than idyllic. As a youngster he’d often ride his bike to Rocco’s Candy Store where he’d enjoy a cold vanilla milk shake while sitting at the counter, or he’d ride his bike to the nearby Tinker’s Pond, where he’d fish for catfish and sunfish, always releasing them back to the pond before heading for home.
Peter had fond memories of going to Shea Stadium with his father to watch the New York Mets play baseball. He always brought his baseball glove with him, with the hope of catching a foul ball.
In 1989 Peter received a 4-Year Bachelor’s Degree from Fitchburg State College, after attending evening courses part-time for 8 years. That same year Peter decided to pursue a career practicing law.
Peter graduated from Cooley Law School in Lansing Michigan, in 1993. He joined the law office of Peter J. Johnson, in St. Joseph, as an associate in 1994. In 2001, Peter opened his own law office, focusing on Social Security Disability, and managed a successful and thriving law practice for 20 years.
Peter met the love of his life, Grace Gianforte in 2008. They were married September 21, 2014 and together they enjoyed nearly 8 years of love, growth, and joy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Grace Gianforte; sisters Barbara Katz and Susan (Jack) Collins; niece Kimberly (John) Gibson and their son Matthew; Grace’s stepson’s Jeff (Andrew Canning) Brothers and David (Jenn) Arnzen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Hilma Katz; and brother Steven Katz.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022 at 3:00 PM at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph.
