Paul's Obituary

Paul Duane Hendricks, 84, of Riverside, Michigan, was born in Bloomingdale, Michigan on November 5, 1938, to Vera and Wayne Hendricks. Wayne was a farmer and teacher in the area. Paul was baptized at Townline Methodist Church, attended Evergreen School, a school for the Deaf in Kalamazoo, and resided for 46 years in Bloomingdale until 1984.

Paul married El Wanda Smedley, a widow with 3 children (Deb, Leonard and Steve) in 1965 and in 1966 their family grew to 6 with the birth of their daughter, Paula.

Paul worked at DuWel Factory (Bangor, Mi.), National Motors Automotive (South Haven, Mi.), Bohn Aluminum (South Haven, Mi.), and at Dean Foods (Paw Paw, Mi.) He was always known as a very hard and conscientious worker.

Paul married Sandra (Bell) Bartalone in 1989 and lived in Riverside, Mi. and was married with no children until she died in 2003. Paul continued to live in Riverside until his recent death.

In 2004, Barbara (niece) & Richard Priebe became primary care-givers for Paul until their deaths in 2022 & 2019, respectively. There were many, many people who cared for Paul while he continued to live at home until 2022. A special thank you to Right at Home, Loren, Tracy, Ella, Liz, Sherry and many others who cared so deeply for him.

Paul was a member/regular attender to PACE of Southwest Michigan. (A Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly). He attended for many years.

Paul spent his last days at the West Woods of Bridgman Nursing Center, where he left this earthly presence on April 10th, 2023.

Paul is survived by his children - Paula (Dan) Siskaninetz of Gobles, Mi., Deborah (Tom) Beck of Pullman, Mi., Leonard (Jane) Smedley of Grand Rapids, Mi, Steve Smedley of Bloomingdale, Mi.; Sister - Effie Koehn of Gobles, Mi.; Nieces - Casey (Brian) Wadsworth of Hartford, Mi., Debra (Tim) Chapman of Lawrence, Mi., Pam Shelton of Bonners Ferry, Id., Nephews - Scott (Heather) Mishler of Winter Haven, Fl., Greg (Paula) Priebe of Norfolk, Ne.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents (Wayne & Vera Hendricks); Wives (ElWanda (Phillips) Hendricks & Sandra (Bell) Hendricks); Brother Orvil Hendricks; Sister Geraldine Leedy; Sister-in-laws (Liberty (Bell) Allwardt & Sharon (Bell) Wilt); and Nieces - Sue Mishler & Barbara Priebe.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 2650 Niles Rd, St. Joseph.
