Oscar's Obituary

Oscar Baby Jones passed away on Friday, September 30, 2022. He was born on June 19, 1949 to LaWanda (Stevens) Walker and Oscar Baby Jones. He always said his birthday was a double holiday, his birthday and Juneteenth.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Baby Jones, daughter Tamela Jones, brother Ronald Jones and sister Juanita Winston. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons Justin and Jahari Jones, his mother LaWanda Walker, brothers Vaughn Stevens (Cynthia) Bruce Jones, Steven Walker (Amy), and sisters Sareena Williams and Sherri Jones. He also leaves three grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and very special family members Dave and Sherri VanderVelde. Oscar dearly loved his family and was a favorite uncle to many of his nieces and nephews.
Oscar was a single parent who raised two sons with pride and dignity. He took them on road trips and would play his old-school music and reminisce about that genre. He especially loved the Isley Brothers, The Temptations, and was a huge Motown fan. Oscar loved good music, great food, and absolutely loved to laugh. His favorite comedian was Bruce Bruce.
Mr. Jones was a man with many interests. He was into black culture and self-awareness. He was poetic and was a sports fanatic, especially basketball and baseball. He also enjoyed watching black history documentaries and loved to tell stories about his youth. He absolutely loved people. One of his greatest fulfillments in life was working with special needs individuals by driving for the Hope Networks in Grand Rapids. The clients just adored him.
He was an all-around man. He was a boy scout under the leadership of his grandfather Fred Singer. He also dabbled in woodworking in high school along with having a paper route with his brother Ronnie.
Oscars favorite dessert was his mom's fabulous strawberry shortcake. She was always excited to prepare his favorite dessert every strawberry season.
Oscar loved cars especially Cadillacs. “Uncle OB was a member of the Cadillac Crew in South Bend, In. He was more than a member; he was a High-Ranking Member THAT CALLED THE SHOTS!” He enjoyed parading in his Cadillac with longtime friend Larry. He affectionately nick-named his close friend Eric “Eazy Rider”. His buddies from the Cadillac crew addressed him as Uncle O.B.
His greatest accomplishment was being a single father and raising two sons. Although they were many years apart, raising two boys was quite challenging, however he was very protective and always made time for his sons and made them feel safe. The boys always knew he had their back.
