Mildred for born November 15, 1935 to Erich and Alice (Kent) Steinke in Benton Harbor, Michigan. As their only child, she grew up on her parent’s rural Sodus fruit farm and attended Mt. Pleasant School, and then, went on to graduate from Benton Harbor High School in 1954. In 1956, Mildred graduated with an Associate in Arts Degree from Benton Harbor Community College while working at Sodus Fruit Exchange and Southern Michigan Cold Storage. After college, she was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company for several years.

Mildred married Arnold Charles Klug on December 10, 1960 in Sodus. Together they owned and operated a family dairy, grain and grape farm in Weesaw Township. And once their children, Brian, Darrel and Irene, were nearly grown, Mildred also first worked part-time at Wilbur’s Ice Cream, and then, at Jone’s Blueberry Farm in Bridgman, Michigan.

Mildred was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Glendora since 1961, active member first of Michigan Junior Farm Bureau, and later Farm Bureau. She was also active with the Berrien County Youth Fair where she first exhibited her 4-H clothing and food projects in the late 1940s, and later became a volunteer on the King & Queen Committee and Ag Expo Building. She liked attending Polka dances with her husband, gardening and baking. She always had wonderful cookies, and fruit desserts made from the local fruit freshly baked and ready for her children and grandchildren to enjoy.

Mildred is survived by her children- Brian (Vicky) Klug of Arlington, Texas, and Irene (Todd) Gerwig of Winterset, Iowa; grandchildren, Neil Klug of Austin, Texas, Neven Klug of Arlington, Texas, Kelsey (Dakota “Cody”) Polhemus of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tyler Gerwig and Carissa Gerwig both of Winterset, Iowa; and a step-grandson, Ryan Lugto of Arlington, Texas.

The family would like to thank Woodland Terrace in Bridgman and Caring Circle Hospice for taking care of our mother and grandmother.
