Mary's Obituary
Mrs. Mary H. Ervin, age 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00AM, Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph 49085. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00AM. A private family burial will take place at North Shore Memory Gardens following the service. Memorial donations in Mary’s memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association or Caring Circle Hospice. Please feel free to share a memory with the family online at www.starks-menchinger.com.
Mary was born on May 18, 1930 in Benton Harbor to Glen and Dorothy (Benson) Books. On June 29, 1947, she married Donald Ervin in Benton Harbor and the two celebrated 75 wonderful years together before Don passed away in 2022. Mary attended Crystal Springs Church of God where she received a special achievement award for teaching Sunday School for 50 years. She had a selfless, generous heart and always helped whenever she could. She volunteered at many kitchens with Don and was known as the person you could always count on in the neighborhood.
Mary was involved in the Benton Harbor PTO and was a 4H Leader while her children were in school. She worked at Eitel’s Bakery for several years and at a nursery in Hartford for 15 years. She and Don opened Mr. Don’s Hobby Shop where Mary was known as “Mrs. Don.” Most of all, Mary loved her family and the many wonderful memories they made together.
Mary is survived by her three daughters, Connie (Melvin) Richter, Patricia (Wayne) Griffin, and Cherie (Gerald) Malzon; seven grandchildren; 23 greatgrandchildren; eight great-greatgrandchildren with one more on the way; brother, Mark Pelton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Along with her husband, Don, Mary was also preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
