Martha's Obituary
Martha F. Zwar, 97, of St. Joseph, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at her home.
Martha was born on January 2, 1927, to Edward & Mary (Seraphin) Edelberg in Benton Harbor. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School. Every day after school, Martha and her twin sister Mary would walk to their jobs at Remington Rand. On January 25, 1947, Martha married the love of her life, Oscar Zwar, in Benton Harbor. Martha was a wonderful mother to their four children and was always putting family first.
Martha was a proud member of the First Assembly of God church where she often played the piano for church services. Her favorite time was spent with her family, especially every fall when she would travel with Oscar to the Upper Peninsula for their two-week fishing vacation. She also looked forward to long cross-country road trips to visit the beauty of America. When she took time from her family chores, Martha loved to solve crosswords and read. There was always a novel with a bookmark next to her Lazy-Boy.
Martha is survived by her children, Kathleen Zwar of St. Joseph, Diane Zwar-Swain of Mesa, AZ, Ronald (Lori) Zwar of St. Joseph and Mary Sue Zwar of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Michael Swain, Rachael (Keith) Swearingen and Rebecca (Kyle) Howard; stepchildren, Matthew (Carla) Minzghor and Kaylee Gratsch; four great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and special niece Nancy Enders.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband Oscar Zwar; parents Edward Edelberg and Mary Edelberg Brendel, stepfather Martin Brendel; and siblings, Emil Edelberg, Olga Riley, Jerry Edelberg and Mary Liedtke.
