Marilyn's Obituary

Marilyn Hartwig, 93, of St. Joseph, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at Royalton Manor in St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, July 1, at 11AM at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd. St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Ruggles Cemetery in Baroda. Friends may visit with the family an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Marilyn was born on November 17, 1930 in Berrien Springs to Walter Miller & Mary (Schmal) Miller Cerpes. On July 13, 1947, she married her high school sweetheart, Leon Hartwig, in Benton Harbor. Together they devoted their life to the work of the Lord. While Leon started the Baroda Church of God in Baroda in 1957 and was instrumental in building three more churches in South Carolina, Virginia and Ohio, Marilyn was critical in starting up the various children’s programs, day camps, Vacation Bible School programs and traveling program for senior citizens. She enjoyed traveling and made it to nearly all 50 states, except Alaska and Maine. Her hobbies included cake decorating, making sugar Easter eggs, sketching, reading, crocheting and she was known for painting wooden arks that Leon made as gifts for friends and family.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Terri (Dennis) Swanson of St. Joseph, Lynn (Jeff) Richardson of Marion, VA and Lisa (Brian) Wagner of Midlothian, VA; grandchildren, Leon Hartwig III, Nicole Muenchow, Trent Richardson, Sandra Osburn, and Nathan Wagner; great-grandchildren, Abigail & Sawyer Muenchow, Lillian, Beau, & Nash Richardson, Ashley Kraft, and Mya Osburn; great-great-grandchild, Aurora Kraft; and sister, Patricia Valentine. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon Hartwig; son, L. Evertt Hartwig, Jr; and siblings, Raymond & Donald Miller, and Alma Prenkert
