Lyle's Obituary

Lyle Curtis Witte, 95, of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 in Bridgman. He was born October 21, 1926 in Kingsford, MI to William and Blanche Witte.

A military graveside service will be held at 10am, Friday, February 4, 2022 at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Memorial contributions may be given to Woodland Terrace of Bridgman, 8850 Red Arrow Hwy, Bridgman, MI 49106.

Lyle grew up in Kingsford and Iron Mountain, MI. He was raised by his father and step-mother. His happiest childhood memory was when he got a new mom, “she taught me everything good.” They enjoyed vacationing in the Midwest and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He was a gifted singer and performed during the grade school and high school years. He also sang in their Lutheran Church choir. During high school, he worked at Montgomery Wards in sales. After, he joined the Navy, training at the Great Lakes US Navy training center in IL. He was a proud WWII veteran.

In 1960, he met Caroline Dickinson at the Blossomtime parade and a few years later they were married; becoming a stepfather to two children. Living in St. Joseph, Lyle was a magazine editor and the owner of Witte Interiors. Lyle and Caroline had the Stockbridge horse riding academy for many years, teaching over 5,000 students, later selling to an organization that assisted abused children. He was most proud of the success he experienced with his design business.

Lyle retired in 1980. He enjoyed volunteering with anyone that needed help, especially children. He was able to travel through Europe and to many islands in the Pacific when he was in the Navy. The most interesting thing he experienced was the invasion of Japan during WWII and witnessing the Japanese surrender.

Lyle is survived by his long-time caretaker, Jeff Nemitz. He is preceded in death by his wife, Caroline (Dickinson) Witte; his step-children, Gordon Brown, and Nancy Dickinson Brown; and his parents.
