Lois's Obituary
Lois graduated from Benton Harbor HS in 1955 at age 16. She earned her BA from Spelman College, Atlanta, GA. and MA in Education from Cambridge College, in Boston, MA.
Lois taught for 26 years in Chicago, IL. She poured her heart into teaching and won many awards for excellence including the coveted University of Chicago, Blum Kovler Foundation Award.
Other awards included excellence in teaching from the Chicago Association of Black School Educators and the Beethoven Elementary School’s Principal Award. Her classrooms were, inviting and filled with children eager to learn.
She retired from the Chicago Public Schools and relocated to Stevensville, MI to be closer to family.
Lois was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Charms Inc, American Bridge Association, the Kennedy King Chorus, and Monday Musical Club.
Lois is survived by her sisters Dr. Gladys Peeples-Burks and Barbara Peeples of Stevensville and her brother Ronald Peeples of Columbus, OH. She is also survived by her nephew Ronald Peeples, Jr. of Columbus, OH; nieces Vicki Peeples of Saginaw, Kim Burks of Fort Worth, TX, Lisa Peeples-Hurst (Andrew) and Audrey Peeples of Benton Harbor, MI., and a host of great and grand nieces and nephews.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents and brothers James Jr. and Richard Peeples.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 10:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 475 Green Ave, Benton Harbor MI. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Benton Harbor, MI. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so www.starks-menchinger.com.
