Lois's Obituary

Lois Jean (Spray) Pierce Hill of Saint Joseph, and affectionately known as Jean, was born in Rhinelander Wisconsin on March 18, 1930, to Goldie Luella (Eades) Winkel. Jean grew up in Northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where she learned to love nature, the woods, and plants. Jean moved to Chicago when she was 16 years old and graduated from Kelly High School in 1948. After graduation, she worked as a bank clerk and lived at the Chicago Eleanor Club in Wicker Park. One evening at a dance, she caught the eye of Jack W. Pierce, and it was love at first sight for both. They were married in 1951 and moved to Glen Ellyn, Illinois where they raised their 3 children. Jean was active in PTA, Girl Scouts, and the women’s bowling league. She loved family vacations exploring nature and fishing in Canada, and she was blessed with a green thumb and loved gardening. She was a loving wife, mother, and her family’s biggest cheerleader.
Her husband Jack passed away in 1974, and Jean found employment as an executive assistant in the computing industry. After retiring, Jean reconnected with her prom date from her high school days in Wakefield Michigan, Theodore H. Hill. They married in 2000 and enjoyed 10 happy years together before Ted’s passing in 2010. In Jean’s later years she loved visiting with family, studying and learning new things, and she loved going for a drive and having a coffee by Lake Michigan.
Jean is survived by her children; Carrie Ann Pierce, Daniel John Pierce (Bree), Susan Gail Nicewanner (beloved son-in-law Todd), her grandchildren: Dr. Wendy Mon-Gen Patton (James), Hailey Jean Nicewanner (Roger Reeter), Kalie Hwei-Gen Pierce (Tom Clayton), Madeliene Paige Kralicek (Kevin), Rhoge Pierce, Lei Pierce. Jean is also survived by the newest member of the family, her great-grandson Alexander James Patton, and also her sisters Sally Trotier (Jim) and Linda Kuhlman, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Patricia Fay, Jack Spray, June Hazelquist, Goldie Ross, Gail Cinfio, and Gary Spray.
Jean passed away peacefully on November 1, 2023 in Saint Joseph, Michigan. Per her wishes there will be a family celebration of her life. She will be missed by her family and friends who loved her dearly and cherish her memory.
