Leslie's Obituary
Leslie was born on August 13, 1966, in Dowagiac, the daughter of Chester and Phyllis (Pompey) Payne. On August 13, 2016 (her Birthday), Leslie was united in marriage to Albert Bownes.
Leslie graduated from Dowagiac Union High School and attended some college classes at SMC.
Leslie was employed by our local county mental health agency for many years as a Vocational Evaluator / Direct Support Professional (DSP). Leslie enjoyed fishing, cooking/baking and spending time with her family and friends. She was no stranger to power tools, or Duct-Tape. Leslie often had a project around the house that she loved to work on. She had a love for life that will deeply be missed, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Surviving are her husband – Albert Bownes; son – Christopher Ross; several Bownes step-children and grandchildren; several Bownes sisters and brothers- in-law were also welcomed into her life; a special son – Jonathon Valentin; siblings – Teresa (Kenneth) Wilson of Southfield, MI, Chester "Bud" Martin of Grenville, AL and Eric (Jessica) Payne of Grand Rapids, MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and 2 brothers – Phillip Kellis and Aaron Armstrong.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, August 15, from 5-7 PM at Clark Chapel – Starks Family Funeral Homes, 405 Center Street, Dowagiac, Ml.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 16 at Second Baptist Church, 203 S. Paul St, Dowagiac, Ml. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
