Judy's Obituary
Judith “Judy” L. Jones, 75, passed away at Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph on January 22, 2024. She was surrounded by her loving three sons, Aaron, Samuel, and Benjamin Jones of Jackson, MI. She is survived by her grandchildren, Courtney, Megan, Delaney, Lauren, Olivia, Isaac, and Parker. Also, by sisters, Ann Baxter of Jackson, MI and Kay Schultz-Soper of Benton Harbor, MI. Preceding her in death were brothers, Robert and Kenneth. She was born in Oak Park, IL to Helen and Arthur Schultz, and moved with the family to Benton Harbor in 1952.
Judy was instrumental in the start-up of the Benton Harbor Arts District in Benton Harbor. It was her vision that the city be improved by the arts, which enticed many other businesses to join in. She had a degree in graphic design and put all her abilities to work to improve the community. She purchased the old Turner building and renovated it into businesses and apartments. Word of mouth is that she was an admired landlord. She and best friend, Nicole, tended to the gardens across from her building (which currently houses ‘Ben’s Pretzel’s’) for all passers-by to enjoy. Her creative talent was evident in anything she pursued.
She will be missed by not only her family, but also by her many friends whom she considered family. Nothing surpassed her love of her children and grandchildren; a perfect day was one spent with them. Judy will be remembered as unique, kind, intelligent, talented and most of all, well-loved. A small family gathering will take place privately, and a larger celebration of life will be held at a later date to be determined. Suggestions for memorial donations are: Benton Harbor Arts Association, 210 Water St., BH, 49022 and Berrien County Cancer Service, 3900 Hollywood Rd., St. Joseph, MI 49085. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.
