John was born on June 20, 1928, to Frank and Ida Anderson Flood in Bainbridge Township, Michigan. He is survived by his loving son John “Larry” and his wife Karla, grandsons Josh (Jill) Flood, Ryan (Cristin) Flood, granddaughters Brigid Steinhagen, Kara Toland and seven great grandchildren: Henry, Flood, Cordelia Flood, Connor Flood, Benjamin Flood, Madison Steinhagen, Caitlynn Talley, and Ethan Steinhagen. John is survived by his sisters Dorothy O’Connel and Virginia (Al) Vanderbough, brother Robert Flood and son-in-law Gary Toland. He was preceded in death by his wife Janet daughter Janet Lee Toland, great grandson Zachary Talley, his parents, brothers Frank, William, James and sisters Shirley Kasischke and Marjorie Johnson.

John met his true love and lifelong companion, Janet Fiedorowicz as a young child at eight years of age when his parents moved into her St. Joseph neighborhood. Janet, being curious, knocked on the door and inquired if there were any children for her to play with. They became good friends and in their late teens their friendship turned to love. They were married 12-28-1948 at St. Joseph Catholic Church and shared 65 wonderful years together.

John received his formal education at St. Joseph Public and Catholic schools. While employed by Whirlpool Corporation, John took advantage of their generous education policy and earned credits from Ohio State University, Indiana University, Georgia Tech and Lake Michigan College.

John was employed by Whirlpool Corporation at the St. Joseph division in 1948. He was transferred to the Clyde, Ohio division in 1950 and back to the corporate office in Benton Harbor in 1956. John retired in 1992 after 44 years in various management positions.

John served in the US Army Medical Corps for 18 months as an assistant to the Commanding Officer and was stationed at Halloran General Hospital in Staten Island, NY and Camp Kilmer, NJ where he was discharged in 1948.

John was one of the founders of the North Lincoln Baseball Association in the 1950’s and served as president for several years. During this period, John helped negotiate with Mrs. Eaton for the sale of her property to establish what is now Eaton Park.

John was an officer in the Whirlpool management club and a board member of the St. Joseph Catholic School PTA and was active in the St. Joseph Catholic Church. He volunteered for Birthright for several years and took great pride in the beautiful yard. They loved to travel here and abroad, spending winters in Florida with their many “snowbird” friends and families.
