John Chalmers's Obituary
In Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was surrounded by his Honey Dumpling
Margaree and his Junior, John. He was born on September 10, 1944, in Lambert Mississippi to
John Henry and Matilda Carter.
John Sr. was united in marriage to Margaree on August 24, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois where
they lived with their children before moving to South Haven, Michigan in 1994. He moved his
family into the home he designed the blueprint for and built himself along with his family and
a few friends under his leadership and guidance. John took pride in his family; he was a very
hard and diligent worker. John was an excellent carpenter, farmer and mechanic.
John is survived by his wife of almost 55 years Margaree Carter, his 11 children: Mary Ann
Rutherford, James Bridgemon (Lisa), Lisa, Jacquelyn, John Jr. (Yolanda), Kimberly, Henry,
Michelle Carter Sholaja, (Ganiyu), Micheal, Margarett and William A. Carter (Kim). 30
Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren, 2 Sisters: Lizzie Bolton and Martha Carter. 5
brothers-in-law, 6 sisters-in-law, his friend of 30 years: Curt Cowell, a host of nieces,
nephews other relatives and friends.
John was proceeded in death by his parents: John and Matilda Carter, Mother-in -law: Ella
Mae Thompson, brothers: Johnny Hudson, Joe and Albert Trent, Kelly Sr., Panolla, William L.
and Forlester Carter. Sisters Ruby and Bretha Trent, Sister-in-law Eva Bean, Daughter-in-law Nicole
Carter and his Granddaughter Kymeisha Thomas.
John touched many lives, his great advice, hard lessons, but most of all his unweaving love
will be greatly missed.
Visitation for John will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 11 A.M. until the time of the
Funeral services at 12 P.M. Eastern time zone, at Solomon’s Temple Church, 4805 Blue Star Highway, South Haven,
Michigan 49090. John will be laid to rest at Stephenson Cemetery in South Haven, Michigan.
John’s wife would like donations to be made in his honor to the American Lung Disease Association.
However, Flowers are welcomed as well.
