Johanna “Jenny” Schmuhl

Johanna “Jenny” (Marsala) Schmuhl, 99, of Benton Harbor, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 4, at 11 AM at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 555 E. Delaware Ave., Benton Harbor, with Father James Adams officiating. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at St. Bernard’s beginning at 10AM until the time of the service at the church. Jenny was born on July 17, 1923 in Riverside to Antonino & Anna (Dina) Marsala. On October 1, 1955, Jenny married the love of her life, John Schmuhl, at St. John’s Catholic Church. Growing up she worked on her family farm with her 4 siblings. Upon turning school age, she attended Riverside No. 6 school. She began her working career being employed at the Box Factory, then making gas masks during WWII. After the war she continued working while attending Benton Harbor Junior College and would later become an Assistant Book Keeper for Whirlpool Corp. After marriage she worked until she and John were expecting their first child. Then Jenny and John purchased a farm where they farmed together and then with their children in tow. Jenny also had a love for sewing, she did alterations for family and friends, Point O Woods Pro Shop and Wyndwicke Pro Shop. She would later work for Blakes Clothing Store as a seamstress until they closed. She then went to worked at Sears, fitting men’s suits and alterations she worked there until retiring at the age of 75. After retirement, Jenny loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She also loved cooking, traveling and attending to her flower garden.

Jenny is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, John, Sr.; children, John (Debbie) Schmuhl, Jr, of Benton Harbor, Ron (Lisa) Schmuhl of Kalamazoo and Carol (Jim) Dansfield of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Patience (Justin) Moghtader, Paige Schmuhl, John (Megan) Dansfield, Blake (Jenny) Dansfield, Brittney Schmuhl, Brooke (Javier) Ledesma, John Schmuhl, Breanna Schmuhl, and Andreana Schmuhl; great-grandchild, Felix Moghtader. She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Joseph, Paul, and Angelo Marsala & Rose Conrad.
