Janet M. Krieger, 83, of Benton Harbor, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023, at her home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 pm (CT) on January 12, 2024 at Graceland Cemetery, 1505 Morthland Dr, Valparaiso, IN 46383. Janet, or more loving referred to as Grannie Jannie or Jannie, was born on November 30, 1940, in Valparaiso, IN, to Irvin & Laura (Bartz) Bernhart. In 1958, Jannie graduated from Valparaiso High School. Jannie worked in retail and real estate, but she eventually found her true gift of caregiving for seniors and managed Rosegate Assisted Living in Traverse City, MI for many years. Jannie eventually retired and moved to Benton Harbor, MI to be close to her best friend and sister, Carol.
If awards were ever given out in shopping or DIY projects, Jannie would’ve won every time; shopping, spending time with her grandchildren and working on home renovation projects brought her great joy. Never without an opinion or filter, Jannie always brought comedy wherever she went. She was a character and has blessed all her loved ones with a multitude of stories that will be forever cherished.
Jannie is survived by her son, Chris (Tina) Butler of Grand Haven; grandchildren, Reid (Maya) Butler, Reilly (Jeremy Lattig) Butler, & Ford (Kelsey) Butler; siblings; Jim (Linda) Bernhart of Fort Wayne, IN, Carol (Mike) Barnard of Eau Claire, MI, & Phil (Debbie) Bernhart of Chandler, AZ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Krieger, her parents, Irvin & Laura (Bartz) Bernhart and brother, F. Charles Bernhart, MD.
