James William Meier, 73, of Benton Harbor, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Corewell Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph.
Jim was born October 11, 1949 in Taylorville, IL to Rollo and Ruth (Sears) Meier. In his younger years, he was a member of the band, The Story, as the bass guitarist and vocalist. Although they disbanded, Jim had a lifelong fondness for music. Jim spent his professional career as a Journeyman CNC machinist. He enjoyed golfing as often as he could and was also a life-time member of the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor Elks Club.
Jim is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary “Becky” (O’Leary) Meier, whom he married on May 5, 1979; his daughters, Jennifer (Steve) Martin, and Shannon Lawrence; his grandchildren, Nikolas and Avery Martin, and Jenna and Ty Lawrence; his siblings, Janet Meyer, Jerry (Nancy) Meier, and J.C. Meier; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place. A private family celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Red Cross of Berrien County, 2614 W John Beers Rd, Stevensville, MI 49127 or the Readiness Center Inc., 347 Catalpa Ave, Benton Harbor, MI 49022.
