Hal's Obituary
Harold “Hal” Mitchell, 81, of St. Joseph, reunited with his wife Peggy Mitchell on Monday, December 19, 2022.
Hal was born on August 17, 1941, to Dr. Harold & Margaret (Soule) Mitchell in Winnipeg, MB, Canada. He graduated from Kelvin High School and then continued his education at North Dakota State University earning his Bachelor of Science in Engineering while playing on the Bison football team. On December 29, 1965, Hal married the love of his life Margaret “Peggy” Robson in Winnipeg. Prior to his retirement in 1999 as he was not Y2K compliant (his joke not ours), he worked for Whirlpool Corp. in the Kenmore Appliance Group.
Hal’s family would like to thank the staff at DiMaggio’s Pizza, North Shore Inn, North Pier Brewery, Livery, St. Joseph Community Tap, Side Yard, Red Arrow Roadhouse, and Howie and Brenda at the Getaway for the kindness and compassion they showed Hal and Peggy Mitchell over the past years.
Hal’s family would also like to thank the amazing staff at Corewell Health South- Lakeland Emergency Room and Cardiac Progressive unit for the wonderful care provided to Hal. We wish we could thank everyone by name, but as events progressed so quickly, we are only left with indelible memories of acts of exceptional kindness towards our father and grandfather in a difficult time.
Hal is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth (Arvydas) Vaitkus of Sawyer and Susan Mitchell of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Margaret Vaitkus of Bloomington, IN and Kestutis Vaitkus of Hammond, IN.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Dr, Harold (Mitch) & Margaret (Peg) Mitchell; and wife Margaret (Peggy) Mitchell, his brothers John Soule Mitchell and Peter George Mitchell.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Public Library, 500 Market Street, St. Joseph, 49085 or Benton Harbor Art’s Association, 210 Water Street, Benton Harbor, 49022. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.starks- Menchinger.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 269-556-9450.
