Jerry's Obituary
A celebration of life service will be held at 1 pm on Monday, January 9, 2023, at Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Buchanan American Legion, Post 51 and the United States Marine Corps. Visitation will be held from 1-4 pm on Sunday, January 8, 2023, also at Swem Chapel. Memorial contributions in Jerry’s name may be made to Caring Circle Hospice or the Buchanan American Legion, Post 51. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.swemchapel.com.
Jerry was born on September 16, 1937, to the late Edward and Clara (Gowland) Slocum in Buchanan. He graduated from Buchanan High School in 1956. Immediately following graduation, Jerry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, honorably serving for four years. Professionally, he served in several roles over the years including the Dog Warden of Buchanan, Buchanan Police Officer and retired from MDOT as a truck driver. Jerry loved the State of Michigan and was sure it was the best of the States. He was a history buff, enjoyed trains, guns, having a good laugh by pulling pranks and most of all loved music. Jerry was very talented, playing the banjo, guitar, harmonica, piano and was a gifted singer. He cherished his family and loved hosting get togethers, often times playing and singing music together.
Jerry is survived by his daughters, Penny Slocum-Correa of Galien, Leisa (Dave) Webb of South Bend, Tinker (Brent) Fouts of Buchanan and Daniel Slocum of Mishawaka; grandchildren, Jeremy (Susan) Clubb, Jerri Lea Fields, Matthew (Amanda) Correa, Amanda (Kevin) Smigielski, Justin (Justine) Webb, Brent (Crystal) Fouts, Jacob (Mary) Fouts, Joshua (Roseanne) Slocum and Brittany (Andrew) Lawson; twenty-one great-grandchildren; brother, Clifford (Willi) Slocum; brother-in-law, Michael Webster and sister-in-law, Carol Slocum. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judie Slocum; daughter, Tami Slocum; brothers, Richard “Skeet” Slocum, Glen (Gladys) Slocum and sisters, Delores (Bob) Smith and Shirley (Julio) Ruiz.
