Gary Benson, age 69 of St. Joseph, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2024 in Tampa, FL while spending his winter there.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30AM, Tuesday, May 7 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 555 E Delaware Ave, Benton Harbor, MI 49022. Visitation will be Monday, May 6 from 4:00PM – 7:00PM at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, 49085. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Foundation, 191 Waukegan Rd Suite 105, Northfield, IL 60093.
Gary was born on February 11, 1955 in Pleasanton, CA to Betty and Clayton Benson. Gary was a hardworking, self-employed carpet installer and often referred to himself as “The Carpet Guy,” which led to many lasting friendships and acquaintances over the years. He almost always ran into people he knew whenever he was out and enjoyed to stop and chat with them.
Gary had a zest for life and enjoyed the simple things, especially being out in nature. He and his wife, Linda, spent the last several winters in Florida to enjoy the warmth and sunshine. Gary could often be found on the golf course or driving range and also liked to watch baseball, football, and basketball. He loved cheering on all of his grandchildren at their various sporting and school events.
Gary will forever be remembered by his wife, Linda Reed; parents, Betty and Clayton Benson; son, Brad (Larisa) Benson; step-son, Ryan Meisner; step-daughter, Sara (Christopher) Utz; his grandchildren, Hailey Benson, Luke Benson, Colin Gordon, Emma Kelley, Todd Kelley, Ella Kelley, Sofia Kelley, Wyatt Kelley, and Lainey Utz; his siblings, Lori Benson, Linda (Mike) Murray, and Kirk Benson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
