Ellen M. Spencer, 79, of New Buffalo, passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021, at Northwest Health- LaPorte.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 11AM, at Lakeside Cemetery in Lakeside, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith City Assembly of God, 1314 S. Woodland Ave., Michigan City, MI 46360. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.sommerfeldchapel.com. Ellen was born on October 2, 1942, to Edmond T & Anna (Wickoski) Purtha in Michigan City, IN. She graduated from New Buffalo High School. On December 9, 1960, Ellen married the love of her life Carl William Spencer. Together they owned and operated C. W. Spencer Landscaping for over 30 years before they sold their business. Ellen then worked for Walmart in the Jewelry Department for over 15 years before she retired.
Ellen was known for her giving heart. She was often found helping others when they were in need. She was a member of Faith City Assembly of God for over 50 years, where she also volunteered for their food pantry and the soup kitchen. Ellen has always been adventurous and she did not let her age come into effect. At the age of 70, she went sky diving and went on her first ride on a motorcycle. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking and gardening. Ellen also had a passion for traveling.
Ellen is survived by her children, Carl (Celestena) Spencer of Benton Township, Marvin Spencer of Bridgman, and Dereaciea (Jerry) Schamp of Little Rock, AR; grandchildren, Tasia (Wade) Sandlin, Dalaney (Bree Wines) Green, William Spencer and Charles Spencer; numerous great grandchildren; brother Richard (Cathy) Purtha of Three Oaks; and special friend Ken Shelby.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl William Spencer, daughter Viviana Lynn Spencer; and siblings, Donna Gushrowski and Victor Purtha.
