Ed's Obituary
Ed was born December 28, 1932, to George and Marie (McKerrihan) Smart in Benton Harbor. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1951, the Junior College of Benton Harbor (LMC) in 1953 and received his BA from his beloved alma mater, the University of Michigan in 1955. Ed enjoyed a long career at Clarke Equipment in South Bend, IN, from June 28, 1965 until his retirement as head accountant on July 1, 1995. Ed was a much-appreciated volunteer at Spectrum Lakeland Health Niles Hospital, where he was honored for his many years of dedicated service.
Ed was on the tennis team in high school and enjoyed golf as well. He was an avid traveler and went on many overseas tours in his lifetime. Ed was an ardent sports fan who loved watching the Detroit Tigers and Lions. Ed was a true blue UoM fan, who enjoyed sporting his maize and blue gear while watching every game! One of his greatest joys was to sit with his brothers George, Richard and John Smart and listen to big band records like Glenn Miller, to share their mutual love of music.
Ed is survived by his three sisters-in-law: Jean Smart of St. Joseph, Muriel Smart of Hamilton, and Gloria Smart and nephew Richie Smart of Muskogee, OK. Ed is also survived by his nieces and nephew: Stefani Smart of Douglas, Scott (Kathleen) Smart of St. Joseph, Jane (Randy) Klingenberg of Hamilton, and Janet (Tom) Smart of Jenison. He was preceded in death by his brothers: George, John, and Richard and nephew Tom Smart. Although Ed did not have grandchildren, he dearly loved his nieces and nephews and their children: Nora, Savannah and Dylan Smart; Mitchell, Sadie, Elliott and Kendal Klingenberg; Tommy, Kayla (Brayden) and Boyd Smart.
