Dwight Stephen Gaines, Jr. (54) was born in the state of Illinois to the union of Ethel Marie (Jackson) Gaines and Dwight Stephen Gaines Sr. on January 9, 1969. The Lord called Dwight home on Wednesday, October 25, 2023.

He leaves to mourn his earthly departure: one sister, Dawn Gaines-Quinn; one brother, Christopher La’Shawn (Aileen) Gaines; two uncles, Martin Steven (Carolyn) Jackson & Dana Gaines; three aunts, Michelle Hall; Harrette Gilbert & Patrice A. Jackson; nieces, Genise Gaines; Angela Clarke; September Caraway; nephews, Victor Clarke; Kendall Clarke; Edward Caraway; Christopher L. Gaines; Dorreon Gaines; Alfred Shelton; Brazil Shelton and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his grandparents, Patricia & Arthur Jackson; Juanita & Harry Gaines; uncles, Derrick Jackson & Darnell Jackson; brother-in-law, Eric Quinn.

Dwight was baptized at Saint Francis DePaul Catholic Church in Chicago, Illinois; where he served as an altar boy. He professed his love for the Lord at an early age.

He received his education throughout various school systems. Pre-school through kindergarten - Saint Francis DePaul Catholic School; Paul Revere Elementary School, and a graduate of Covert High School in the state of Michigan.

Dwight was affectionately called “Steve” by his family and friends. He had a youthful desire to take on one of his favorite sports; which was the practice of martial arts, (karate) mimicking after his late uncle “Derrick”. He wanted to be like Bruce Lee. Everyday “Steve” would gear-up in his karate suit and carry his karate sticks ready for the challenge.

As “Steve” matured, his desires changed. He took on the passion for poetry and began to write his own poems.

Dwight was a loving, friendly, and caring person in his own way. He had the laugh of Eddie Murphy, that’s how you knew he was in the room.

A Wake for Dwight will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at Second Baptist Church, 1113 Indiana Ave, South Haven Michigan, 49090 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m., Pastor Dureya Gibson will officiate., Eulogy will be given by Pastor Martin Jackson.
