Born Dorothy Elmyra Sealy on June 13, 1933, to Leon and Pearl Sealy, of Boston Massachusetts, she attended and graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School for girls in 1950. Dorothy furthered her education at Lake Michigan College. Dorothy would meet and later marry Edgar M Singleton (US Navy-Korea) on March 10th, 1955. From that union would come ten children.

The family settled in Chicago, IL in 1955 before moving to South Haven, MI in 1968. Dorothy was a partner in Shabazz Enterprises where she held many administrative roles including accountant, daycare principal, real estate, landlord and automotive sales. Dorothy had a passion for sewing, clothing design, theater acting and the culinary arts. She was an outstanding seamstress and cook. Dorothy would become well known for her sewing skills and would run her own upholstery business. In addition to upholstery services, she also provided catering for special events. If that were not enough Dorothy also worked in the health care industry for years as a Nursing Assistant, Hospice care, and private duty CNA. In her own right, Dorothy was a doctor, professor, accountant, chef, entrepreneur, farmer, gardener, and domestic goddess. This is evident in her children who possess the knowledge and talent she bestowed.
