Donald Lee Nigro, 91, of Benton Harbor, passed away on March 11, 2023, at his winter home in Yuma, AZ. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel – 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI.

Don was born in Coloma on August 23, 1931, to Joseph and Mary-Catherine Nigro and grew up in a large Catholic family.

Don was a proud Korean War veteran. He served in the U.S. Army with the 37th Field Artillery, 2nd Division as a sergeant. During this conflict, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, the U.N. Service Medal and the National Defense Medal. In later years, Don continued his service through the American Legion – Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also served as the director for the Van Buren County Youth Fair. Don worked as an electrician for Whirlpool Corp., from 1949-1994.

Don was an engaging conversationalist and cared deeply for his family. He is survived by his loving wife – Hilde, of Benton Harbor; sons – Jeff of Taylor, TX, James of Watervliet, MI and Brian of Alvin, TX; three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday – April 17, 11:00am, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel. Family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00am at the funeral home. Military honors will follow the service. Private family burial will take place at North Shore Memory Gardens.
