Derek Prather, 34, of St. Joseph, MI passed away Monday, November 29, 2021 at his home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel and Cremation Service, 2650 Niles Rd. Derek was born August 27, 1987 in Oklahoma City, OK to Greg & Melody (Priest) Prather. Derek graduated from St. Joseph High School, St. Joseph, MI in 2006.
Derek is survived by his parents, Greg & Melody Prather, sister Andrea (Anderson) Capsel, nephew Collin Capsel, niece Mackenzie Capsel, brother Jared Prather and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Derek was preceded in death by his grandparents.
While attending St. Joseph High School, Derek played French Horn in Band and Symphony Orchestra. In 2006 he traveled with the band and orchestra to the Mozart Festival in Italy and Austria. Derek was also in the Concert Choir where he sang bass. He auditioned and participated in the Regional, State and All-State Honor’s Choirs throughout High School. Music gave him great joy.
Derek had a love and great skill in foreign languages. It began with Latin at St. Joseph High School, then French, Spanish and Italian in college. He was conversant in Spanish and French.
Derek will be remembered for being loving, kind, compassionate and loyal. His kindness was extended to family, friends, and the dogs and rabbits he had through the years. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan located at 5400 South Niles Road, St Joseph, MI 49085.
