CHARLES BARRETT, JR., OR “JUNEBUG” as he was affectionately known by family and friends, passed away peacefully at home, on Sunday, January 28, 2024, in Hobart, IN. Junebug was 56 years old and was born November 25, 1967 to Charles and Janie Barrett, in Benton Harbor, MI.

He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1985 and went on to attend Michigan State University from 1985-1987 majoring in Engineering. He later joined the United States Army from 1987 to 2000 as a Combat Engineer. He became a Certified Computer Technician in 2000 and graduated from Governors State University with a Bachelor of Arts in 2002 and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2004.

Junebug was an entrepreneur, working and consulting for several companies as an IT Technician and Computer Programmer. He also worked as a Home Depot representative for 20 years to fund his home improvement projects.

During his almost 13 years of honorable service in the United States Army, Junebug was stationed at numerous duty stations across the country and around the world. Junebug’s awards and decorations include but are not limited to the Army Commendation Medal (5th Award), Army Achievement Medal (4th Award), Army Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Army Lapel Button, Noncommissioned Officer’s Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 2, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) and the Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia). He leaves behind a legacy of honor, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to defense of the United States of America.

Junebug lived an extraordinary life filled with laughter, love, adventure, and mostly, an immeasurable devotion to his family and friends. He was a source of inspiration and guidance to his nieces and nephews, imparting valuable life lessons including the importance of honesty, hard work, financial prudence and self-sufficiency, leaving behind many cherished memories.

Whether working on computers, vehicles, home improvement or DIY projects, Junebug was very meticulous about all he put his hands to, and he was able to fix or build just about anything. He loved refurbishing older BMWs. He was an avid collector of comic books, a gifted artist, and enjoyed listing to jazz and R&B.

Like his beloved parents, Junebug was a giving, compassionate, good-humored, dependable, humble, patient and gentle soul who lived his life with integrity and Christian principles. He truly had a heart of gold. He will be remembered for being a loving, dedicated son, brother, uncle and great uncle who gave freely to his family.

Junebug was preceded in death by his Parents Charles (Janie) Barrett, Brother Jerry Barrett and special great Uncle Thomas (Hessie) Ross.

He is survived by seven siblings: Brothers - Willie (Cathelene) Campbell-Barrett of Garland, Texas; Christopher Barrett and Cecil Barrett of Benton Harbor. Sisters - Carol (Alton) Phillips Sr. of Greensboro, North Carolina; Connie Barrett, Sandra Barrett, and Cindy (Joseph) Taylor of Benton Harbor. Thirteen nieces and nephews: Crystal Poole, Alton (Chanel) Phillips Jr., Jonathan Campbell, Dezire Becke, Dejuan Becke, Charles Poole, Constance McCoy, Brittany Phillips, Corey Isom, Joseph Taylor Jr., Jordan (Keyona) Phillips , Joshawn Taylor, Lakesha (Kenneth) Sindle and 21 grand-nieces & nephews. He also leaves a great Uncle Cleo (Yvonne) Ross of Kansas City, MO, Uncle Lonzo (Cindy) Boyd, of Matteson, IL, Aunt Mertha Shoats of Independence, KS, Uncle Walter Campbell, Jr. of Battle Creek, MI, God Aunts Hazel (Joseph) Griffin and Margaret Batiest of Benton Harbor, MI, as well as a host of cousins, family and friends and special friend, Ingrid Brooks. Junebug will be deeply missed and forever live in our hearts.
