Ben's Obituary

Ben W. Johnson,93, of South Haven passed away on October 31st, 2023 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. Ben was born on May 4th, 1930 to Carl and Bernice Johnson.

Ben was raised in Breedsville, MI. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1949, after graduating Ben worked for a short time at Everett Piano and Standard Coil before going into the Service. Ben was in the Naval Reserve for two years in San Diego and the Marine Corps for two years in Japan. He then worked for the City of South Haven as acting City Engineer for 34 years retiring in 1992. Ben was also a volunteer fireman for many years for South Haven, he continued long after his retirement to occasionally visit the fire department that he loved so much. After retiring he was a bridge tender for The City of South Haven from 2011- 2016. Ben enjoyed golfing, wood working, playing cards with friends, spending time with family and traveling. He was a member of American Legion, Post 49 in South Haven, Michigan.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Tina Roberts, sister-in-law Olive and a brother-in-law Chuck. Three grandchildren; Carrie ("Butch") Fogarty, Mary Jackson, Luka (Nick) Spurck Eight great grandchildren; Cellie (Drew) Olando, Damien Maynor, Paul Fogarty, William Fogarty, Nicholas Fogarty, Ava Gardner, Peyton Gardner, Scarlett Spurck, two great great grandchildren; Allin Fogarty and Emberleigh Olando.

Ben was preceded in death by his Wife Mary, his parents, a brother Arthur, brother in laws George, Pat and Leonard. Sister in laws Rose and Patty.

Visitation for Ben will be Friday November 10, 2023 at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 06321 Blue Star Memorial Highway, South Haven, Michigan 49090 from 10 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 12 p.m. Pastor Travis Wilson will officiate. Ben will be accorded Military Honors and laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery, South Haven, Michigan.
